Wedding mementos, we all have them; corsages, boutonniere's, bouquets, invitations, etc... but what do we do with them? These items are special and deserve to be preserved so that you can look at them often to remember the details of the special day. My son's wedding was last year and I have thought about framing the mementos for awhile, but how? The cheap shadow box I had from Joann's wasn't deep enough. Last week I had the perfect thought! This was an old clock of my mother's. After she passed, I found it in my grandpa's house and took it home. The clock no longer worked so I took out the clock pieces, painted it white and hung it on my dinning wall to display odds and ends. The past few days I have turned it into a shadow box for Travin and Jaylee's wedding memorabilia and it turned out perfect! First, I played with the placement which to be honest, too awhile. Then I whipped out the old glue gun and began gluing the tie, corsage and boutonniere. I cut up a pizza box from the trash and glued about 10 small pieces together so that their announcement will pop out. Jaylee loves pearls, they are both her and Travin's birthstone. I purchased this little jar to display a few of the pearls left over from the wedding. What do you think of mom's old clock? Isn't she beautiful? Now I need to find something to frame Camrie's wedding memories in.
The first thing that may go through a parents mind when their son or daughter informs them that they are getting married is... How am I going to pay for this? or How much will this wedding cost? I am not going to lie, those thoughts ran through our minds from before the engagement until the wedding day! Lets face it, weddings are expensive and we all want our kids to have the best that we can give them without breaking the bank. Will you make budget mistakes when planning your wedding or your children's weddings? You bet! You will buy things you later will decided you didn't need, you will think of things to add after the budget is set and you will underestimate the cost of the whole shebang! Thankfully, this article from The Knot shares with us some tips on some mistakes to avoid such as: keeping track of how much you have spent, set your expectations according to your budget and deciding what is important. Take a look here to check out the pointers for yourself!
My mom bought me a white dress,
Not red or pink or blue. She said it was a special dress Like very other few. There has been just one before, A dress now put away, That I wore some time ago Upon my blessing day. As a little baby clothed In my first white dress, My dad held me in his arms, There to name and bless. So pure and clean was I just then, With time to grow and learn. About the Father's plan for me My glory I must earn. Now I've reached the age to judge The wrong road from the right, And I am here to be baptized In this dress of white. So once again I'm free from sin. The path is clear to me. I'll grasp the rod and hold on tight, I vow with certainty. Just as mud would stain my dress, Sin would stain my soul. The key is to repent or bleach, For whiteness is my goal. And if I try my very best, Then richly blessed I'll be Wearing inside God's holy house White dress number three So today I make this pledge; I'll strive to choose the right, Through this sacred baptism ordinance In my second dress of white Linda Gay Perry Nelson
About a month before the wedding I thought about adding 'My Three Dresses' to the decor. I have Camrie's dresses so I would technically be FREE. I struggled with the display and originally thought of getting a small dress form for her baptism dress (which I could not find) and didn't know how to hang up her blessing dress. After lots of browsing and thinking, I presented it to my mother-in-law. She reminded me of my Camrie doll. My great aunt made me this porcelain doll 18 years ago. I immediately tried the dress on the doll thinking it would be too small but it fit perfectly. Then the plan came into motion.
I really love the 'three dresses'. They are not displayed at weddings and the other dresses are just as important as the wedding dress that is so focused on at weddings. Wow, wedding cakes can be expensive! And what do you do with it? I mean you really don't want your family to eat the whole thing. So we did the next best thing, served it at the reception! Karen Kay has been a dear friend of mine from my old neighborhood for 20 years, I lost track of her after I moved because she moved also. I didn't know who I was going to get to make Camrie's cake until I went to another friend's wedding reception and guess who was there...... I was so happy to reconnect with Karen Kay and happy that she got to make Camrie's cake. She did a beautiful job! 4 double tiers, classic white for the bride and groom, raspberry lemonade, brownie and marble with about 40 fresh flowers and real ivy for decoration. It was so sad when I looked over during the reception and saw that it was being cut for serving but very happy that I didn't have to eat most of it myself! I actually had to request that they save some for Brett and I. My friends that were serving said they heard many people say that it was fun to eat the wedding cake (it isn't popular around here to serve it I guess) and that it was really good and moist. Some even came back for 2 or 3 peices! Karen Kay, you did a magnificent job! I didn't want to use a round table and a table cloth to display this gorgeous cake so another dear friend let us borrow this stunning table and another had the grand idea of using her white screen as the backdrop with photos and lights. What would we do without special friends to help out!
I do not know how this reception turned out so beautiful but IT DID! I truly owe it to friends and family (I cannot thank you enough) who sacrificed their time and talents to help decorate and put on the finishing touches. I could not have done it without them. I owe special thanks to my dear husband for filming this video, he was so thoughtful for thinking of doing it.
LDS Cultual Hall's are known for room dividing curtains and carpeted walls. Thankfully, this building didn't have the curtains do deal with which made the ceiling treatment and decorating simple and elegant and we put the carpeted walls to use which luckily, were close to her colors! Enjoy the short video and please leave your thoughts in the comments! #LDSculturalhallwedding
I found on Pinterest that wall flowers are the rage right now and was thrilled when I found this file fpr $6.99 on svgcuts.com and I could make my own for a lot less then purchasing them off of Etsy. (The large black and white photos were printed at Staples for about $3 each)
The file was cheap, I had a silhouette machine and a cutting mat but was stumped at the paper cost. Paper can be very expensive, the large flower uses 25 sheets, the medium 13 and the small flower uses 8 sheets of 12x12 paper. All in all, I needed about 150 sheets, yikes! Then I had the grand idea of using white cardstock from the local print shop and spray paint them different colors. The print shop could cut what I needed and it would be a lot cheaper then purchasing scrapbook paper. I had my plan and presented it to the bride and she didn't like it but I did it anyway.
My first step was to purchase the paper and the file, easy peasy. The second step was to begin cutting the shapes. Little did I know that the free silhouette program (which I have) will not open svg files. I had to purchase an upgrade for $30, I was bummed because I was desperately trying to keep the cost down. Oh well, maybe I will be cutting more svg files in the future.
I do not have many photos of the assembly process, but it entailed a lot of cutting, gluing, rolling, gluing and spray paint.
My sister in law saw them before the reception and said they were gorgeous and these flowers will be the talk of the reception. Everyone will want to know how I made them and want to borrow them. She was right. It was funny that at the reception many people asked me where I got the flowers. I kept responding, "Which ones? (there were several different kinds of flowers at the reception, haha)
There you go, now you have all the details to make you own. Svgcuts.com also has a very good instructional video. You need a silhouette, the $6.99 file, paper, glue gun, a little spray paint and lots of time.
Please let me know in the comments what you thought of the flowers.
Oh my goodness, we struggled coming up with the perfect centerpiece for this wedding. Camrie had an idea in her mind of what she wanted and tried to explain it to me. I just wasn't getting it. I purchased vases only to hate them later. Thank goodness you can return things, right? One day while searching Pinterest, I came across THE centerpiece. It was exactly what she ordered, and now that I had a picture I could easily recreate it.
Once again, thank you Pinterest. After I had a photo, the rest came easy. I returned vase to the Dollar Tree and exchanged them for the margarita glasses. I made a few trips to the DI for the bumpy glass bud vases (I have no idea what they are called). Purchased glass votive's from Amazon and asked and asked and asked around for wine glasses. A friend at work knew a friend who had several, THANK YOU! (saved about $20).
I searched Pinterest for the trick to take the labels off. All I had to do was soak the bottles in the sink filled with HOT water, dawn and baking soda. Came off nicely. I then ran them through the dishwasher and had to wait a few weeks for the weather to cooperate before painting them gold. I love them and think they are beautiful.
I was nervous to paint the bud vases. How the heck do you do it? Do you paint the inside (but then how do you put water in the vase for the roses) Do you just paint the outside? What kind of paint do you use? Well, I just winged it and we all LOVE how they turned out. I purchased white chalk paint from Walmart and spay painted the outside of each vase. I think Camrie and I will be fighting over who get to keep them after the reception.
I do not think they make these vases anymore. I highly recommend you stake out your local thrift store and but all that you can and paint them white. They turned out gorgeous!
Now for the flowers. I called a local floral shop and found out that one rose will cost me $4, YIKES! $4 times 4 roses times 8 tables = Brett is broke! I was hoping a sale on flowers Joann's would do the trick - NOPE! One rose there can cost $10 and a 50% off sale is still too expensive. So I googled fresh flowers and found a place called Global Rose. I can get 75 roses for $100. That is enough roses for the centerpieces, roses to decorate the cake with and roses to put in vases. It's a win win! I pray they show up on time and are beautiful.
We found the perfect backdrop for this wedding, thank you Pinterest.
This was approved by the bride and groom to be and looks easy to replicate. My husband and I have been rummaging different ideas through our heads on what to build this out of, how to make it strong and sturdy and how to make it stand up. One of our dilemmas was the weather because it has been horrible this year! Rain, snow, freezing temperatures and did I mention the wind? Finally, last week we got a break and Brett built the frame and the stand and I painted it. This week, I have been playing with different ideas on how to dress it up.
I am pretty please with how the stand turned out, it was pretty cheap also. 1 1x3 and 2 shelf brackets is all it took.
I am so blessed, a dear friend had two of these gorgeous vases in her storage and offered to let me borrow them. The beautiful flowers are borrowed from Brett's sister. They are perfect.
How in the world do you dress this thing up? I have struggled with that all week. I have pink chiffon, grey chiffon, navy tulle and guess what....I don't like any of it. I do love the additional flowers and greenery I purchased.
I think (I hope) I have it all figured out. I am borrowing something special and hope it all works out and is gorgeous. Best part, the whole backdrop including the extra flowers was under $80, can't beat that! You will have to wait and see the final next week.
UPDATE: Here is a photo of the backdrop all decorated! Friends did a magnificent job on the flowers and Uncle Merlin and Travin rocked at lighting it up!
